ReSolute Brings Marko Nastic to Bar 13

ReSolute will be bringing Marko Nastic to Bar 13 this Friday night for a rare club event.
The ReSolute crew has been responsible for some fantastic parties in the past few months, including a transcendent afterhours at TV Bar during this year’s DEMF and Bunker resident DJ Derek Plaslaiko’s birthday party in June here in NYC.
Playing alongside Marko Nastic will be Connie, one of ReSolute’s resident DJs, and Stefny, who has released tracks on Pheek’s Archipel label. Both Connie and Stefny played great sets last Sunday during the Waxx Dolls reunion event at Porch.

Alan Braxe at Santos’ Party House
Alan Braxe & Fred Falke - Rubicon
Alan Braxe will be playing at this week’s Été D’Amour party. Alan is well known for his original material with Fred Falke as well as being an incredibly prolific remixer. Braxe also collaborated with Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter on everybody’s favorite French house track, Music Sounds Better With You, as Stardust.
Fluokids will also be in the house Thursday night, with Pharrell (not to be confused with Pharrell of N.E.R.D. and The Neptunes) DJing. New York’s 33hz will also be playing a live set.
Rushmore at McCarren Pool - Last Free Pool Event

“You guys have it real easy. I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn’t matter. You were born rich and your going to stay rich. But here’s my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can’t buy backbone. Don’t let them forget it. Thank you.”
Rushmore, one of our favorite movies, will be playing tonight at the McCarren Pool. This is the last free event ever before this empty concrete pool gets turned into a… uhhh… pool people can swim in. Arrive early, it is going to be packed. The movie starts at sundown.
The Habitual Chicken Ritual Contest is also happening tonight at Habitat in Greenpoint.

Their next show in the city will be on Halloween at the Danbro Brewery Warehouse.
Deitch Art Parade 2008
The 2008 Art Parade is coming up on Saturday, September 6th! The parade starts at 4pm and runs along West Broadway from Houston to Grand.
We strongly recommend coming out and watching the procession. This has consistently been our favorite free event for the past 3 years. If you’re not really sure what to expect, think of a homecoming parade on acid.

We will be participating in the Algorithm Nation for the second year in a row. Hope to see you there!
Pretty Ugly Art Show

I don’t know how we missed this the first go around, but check out Pretty Ugly at Gavin Brown’s enterprise. GBE’s website isn’t the most informative — here’s a link to the address (620 Greenwich St.) The show runs until Friday, August 29th.
Polka Madre at Nacotheque Saturday

Supreme WTFery at Nacotheque on Saturday. Nacotheque is a dance party held the second and fourth Saturday every month at Fontana’s.
Via Nonsense NYC:
Saturday, 8/23: Live performance by Mexican Polka-punks Polka Madre. Hailing from Mexico City, these ragged but righteous internationalist weirdos blend Romanian dance music, Klezmer (listen to that punky clarinet!), Brahms dances, with strong rocking beats and ironically nihilist lyrics in at least three languages. During live shows, their sinister music can cause crowd nakedness, the breaking of bottles and liberal dabs of alcohol-scented sweat. They have toured extensively in Mexico, Europe and the USA, playing in the punk scene, bars, jails, schools, festivals and everywhere they are allowed to take out their instruments (if they are not allowed, they will play anyway, until police arrives).
Polka Madre just played Zebulon on Tuesday, anyone catch them? They’re also playing a Mexican restaurant tonight (Hecho en Dumbo) and the Mexico Now Festival on September 11.
Sunday School for Degenerates — GIVEAWAY!

There’s less than two weeks left before Sunday School for Degenerates invades NYC on Labor Day weekend. Since 2006, Sunday School has held as the closing party for Winter Music Conference at Miami’s Pawn Shop and has gained a reputation for being one of the best and most outrageous WMC events.
Here in New York, we’ll be getting Sunday School in three parts: Overboard Boat Party (Preschool), Sunday School for Degenerates and Afterschool Special. The boat party will start at 5PM on Sunday night with the Afterschool Special event finally winding down at 9PM on Monday night. Yes, that’s twenty-eight straight hours of partying for those hardcore enough to handle it and, if you purchase a multi-event pass, you’ll even get transportation (on a bus, natch) from one event to the next.
The boat party will feature Adultnapper and Steve Bug, as well as an hour of open bar to encourage our fashionably late asses to show up on time!
The main party was originally scheduled to be held at Studio B, but in light of the club’s recent permitting issues, it has now been moved to Rebel in Manhattan. Dan Berkson & James What will be playing a live PA, as will Kate Simko. Additional support on the decks will come from Mr. C, Martin Landsky, Three, and Taimur & Crazy Larry.
Afterschool Special will be held at The Yard, our new favorite outdoor electronic venue. We’re especially excited to hear Cassy and Zip outside as our New York summer slips away just a little too quickly.
FREE STUFF ALERT!!!
We’ve got a pair of tickets to give away for the main Sunday School party at Rebel. To enter, email info@obscenenyc.com with your craziest, most ridiculous party story of this year. We’ll pick the best one and notify the winner on Wednesday of next week. And for the rest of you, we’ll publish the winning story the same day (anonymously, if you’re worried that your mom might read it).
And, last but certainly not least, we’ve got MP3s for many of the artists that will be playing Sunday School after the cut.
Été D’amour Thursdays at Santos Playhouse

Matthew Dear spun for four hours last week at Été D’amour Thursdays. The set started off kind of slow and mellow, but by 2:30am Matt was dropping some pretty nasty techno tracks.
This was our first time at Santos Party House and overall, we were very impressed. At times, the venue felt a little too bright for Matthew Dear’s set but perhaps it wouldn’t feel so out of place for less aggressive dance music. The crowd was an odd mix of downtown kids, clubbers, Europeans, and Asians. The bar was a bit tough to get to at the beginning of the night, but it wasn’t impossible. The soundsystem was solid, if a little loud.
To us, Santos Playhouse feels like a smaller, better execution of what Studio B was trying to be in terms of music programming when it first opened. We’re happy the Été D’amour nights are around. They fill a big void for dance music on Thursday nights that we haven’t felt happy with since GBH’s Thursdays at Hiro two years ago.
There are a couple of good Thursdays lined up. We’re really looking forward to the September 25th night with Kompakt’s Micheal Mayer and Superpitcher.

Matthew Dear at Santos Party House

Matthew Dear will be playing a 4-hour DJ set during Thursday’s installment of Made Event’s Été D’Amour party at Santos Party House.
We’ve seen Matt play at least a half dozen times by now, and he always brings the ruckus.
We’re also excited to check out this fairly new space located at 100 Lafayette for the first time since it’s opening. We hear it’s an incredible spot and we’re actually considering making it a double header this week and hitting up Santos on Wednesday night as well for some Special Disco Version action courtesy of DFA.
Tricks of Light Photo Exhibit Opening

Local experimental photographers Seze Devres and Julian Sherida-McKenna will be showing their work this Friday, August 1st from 8pm to midnight at the home of art patron and filmmaker Charles Merritt, located at 240 Richardson Street in Brooklyn. You may know Seze already as the hostess and resident photographer of two of our absolute favorite recurring parties - The Bunker and Kiss & Tell.
Expect to see plenty of the NYC techno regulars hanging around and heading over to The Bunker for the afterparty featuring Marc Schneider and Triple R. Triple R recently did a podcast for Resident Advisor which has, unfortunately, been archived. But, we’ve got you covered ;)

Kehinde Wiley at The Studio Museum

[Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five by Kehinde Wiley, 2005]
Kehinde Wiley, one of our favorite painters, will be showing some pieces at The Studio Museum in Harlem through October 26, 2008.
From The Studio Museum Harlem’s website:
Kehinde Wiley is known for his stylized paintings of young, urban African-American men in poses borrowed from eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European figurative paintings, a practice he started in the early 2000s while an artist in residence at the Studio Museum. Over the last two years, Wiley has expanded his project by living and working abroad; he temporarily relocates to different countries and opens satellite studios to become familiar with local culture, history and art. His Gra“The World Stage” series is the result of these travels.
Wiley’s first trip was to China, where he placed his models in poses based on Chinese propaganda art from the Cultural Revolution. The World Stage: Africa, Lagos ~ Dakar, organized by Christine Y. Kim, features paintings from Wiley’s next stops, Senegal and Nigeria. For this exhibition, Wiley’s models mimic historical public sculptures from Dakar, Senegal, and Lagos, Nigeria.
Target’s Free Sundays are marked on this calendar. Otherwise, admission is $7.00 for adults.
Akron/Family Tonight at Castle Clinton, Short Film
Dear Deer by Alan Weber
Drinking outdoors and watching weird movies is not a bad way to spend a Friday night. We checked out the Rural Route-curated Rooftop Films last Friday on the lawn of the Automotive High School in Brooklyn. One of the crowd favorites was Dear Dear set to the music of Akron/Family’s “Don’t Be Afraid, You’re Already Dead”. Drinking outdoors and listening to weird rock music on a Thursday night shouldn’t be too bad either. Akron/Family is playing a free show tonight at Castle Clinton in Battery Park as part of the River to River Festival.

Boredoms 88 BoaDrum 8/8/08 Tickets Available
Just a quick heads up, tickets are now available at Soundfix, Other Music and Brownpapertickets.com for the 88 drummer performance organized by Boredoms in Brooklyn.
From Pitchfork:
Japanese psych-noise-crazy-genius-types Boredoms will once again bring the clattering of oh-so-many drums to the States this summer, in a bi-coastal sequel to last year’s wildly successful 77BoaDrum event. This time out, they’re calling it 88BoaDrum, and performances of the brand new 88-minute composition from Boredoms leader Eye will take place August 8 (8/8/08, you see) in both Los Angeles and Brooklyn, New York.
The Los Angeles event will take place beginning at 8:08 PM PST at the city’s famed La Brea Tar Pits, and will feature 88 drummers selected by both the Boredoms and 88Boadrum artistic director Hisham Bharoocha of Soft Circle. The New York event, conducted on behalf of the Boredoms by Brooklyn’s own Gang Gang Dance, goes down at 8:08 PM EST at the Williamsburg waterfront.
Both BoaDrums will be free and open to the public, but tickets will be required for entry. They’ll be available starting Friday, July 18 at brownpapertickets.com, at L.A.’s Amoeba Records and the L.A. County Museum of Art, or at New York’s Other Music and Sound Fix Records. Only one ticket will be available per person.
88BoaDrum is presented by Nike Sportswear, who will bring you the commemorative “88Boadrum NSW Tee collection”. Attendees will be able to purchase t-shirts, featuring designs by Eye, that will be hand-screened at the events.
