After watching Spain win the (very scoreless) World Cup final, we ran over to catch Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof play Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures at Jelly NYC’s first Pool Party of the year. Lines were short, the food got better (Roberta’s and Meat Hook!) and we couldn’t ask for a better combo to play the classic Joy Division album. Xiu Xiu’s haunted vocals blended perfectly with Deerhoof’s guitars. The perfect start to the Summer concert season.

Tame Impala tore through a 50 minute set of their infectious psych rock at Glasslands last night to finish their string of NYC dates. They were surprisingly young and we were impressed with their tight set with a few extended jams. They can easily fill a larger venue and we imagine we’re not going to be able to see them in such an intimate venue for a while.

The Bicycle Film Festival celebrates its tenth year and runs from June 16-20, 2010 in New York City. The festival features some amazing bike videos such as Spike Jonze’s The Birth of Big Air, Line of Sight featuring the work of Lucas Brunelle, and the world premiere of NYC-centric Empire.

If you can’t make the film screenings we suggest checking out the Joyride Art Show on Thursday or the Saturday Night After Party at 88 Broadway with Star Eyes from Trouble and Bass.

One of my favorite live bands, Caribou has a strong focus on percussion with the right mix of samples and live instrumentation. You never feel like they are playing to a backing track with samples leading the way.
