“The Museum of Modern Art has commissioned Antony and the Johnsons to perform Swanlights, on Thursday, January 26th, 2012 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Featuring a 60-piece orchestra, the performance piece is conceived as a new commission especially developed for the January 26th performance, and an evolution of the highly acclaimed The Crying Light, which was presented at the Manchester Opera House for the 2009 Manchester International Festival. Envisioned as a meditation on light, nature, and femininity, Swanlights includes songs from all four of Antony and the Johnsons’ albums (self-titled, I am a Bird Now, The Crying Light, and Swanlights), set to symphonic arrangements by Nico Muhly, Rob Moose, and Maxim Moston. It is produced in collaboration with light artist Chris Levine, lighting designer Paul Normandale, and set designer Carl Robertshaw. Antony and the Johnsons: Swanlights is organized by Klaus Biesenbach, Chief Curator at Large of The Museum of Modern Art and Director of MoMA PS1, with the assistance of Eliza Ryan, Curatorial Assistant, MoMA PS1. Klaus Biesenbach spoke with The New York Times today about the upcoming event. Grown ripely from the artists imagination’s, vines hang low from a dark cave while saturated palates and jungle patterns overwhelm the senses and create feelings of a long forgotten mystical swamp.

To celebrate, they will be throwing a block party on Sunday afternoon. From what we’ve heard it may be a mini Bike Kill-style event.

You missed out if you never had the opportunity to experience Bike Kill. The fun, chaos, and destruction was something we looked forward to every year. Unfortunately there are repercussions associated with turning an unsuspecting Bedstuy block sandwiched between a public school and a Home Depot parking lot into a smoldering crater of hot garbage straight out of Mad Max. We hope things get ironed out in the future.

In the meantime, check out this great documentary on Bike Kill 666 and reminisce with us on Sunday!

140 CHARACTERS OR LESS IS THE NEW BLACK.

New York Shitty posted on a party that occurred last weekend in Williamsburg:

My wife and I and our 16 month old daughter have been kept up all night by a quite clearly illegal dance party hosted in a stalled condo project on North 1st, between kent and wythe I called the police a total of 4 times during the night, and 311 as well. Do you know how to get hold of the details of the owners of buildings like this ? Also, is there anything we can do as members of the community ? Community board meetings or similar? It’s 7.30 and it’s still going on. I’m concerned that if they think the cops are powerless, they will carry on for the rest of the summer. If they do, we’re moving out. Any suggestions you could make would be greatly appreciated.

We’ve been to a lot of these types of parties and we’ve definitely been witness to families and neighbors telling us how they’ve been inconvenienced so there really isn’t much groundbreaking news here. What is worth reading appears in the comment below…

I have a suggestion. Move yourself, your wife and your 16-month-old daughter to the Upper East Side. Better yet, head to the nice, quiet, family-oriented communities of Long Island or Jersey.

Instead, you chose to move to Williamsburg: “home of the illegal dance party/all-night indie-rock drug n boozefest.” And now you’re surprised by this?

Not to mention, you chose to raise your daughter in an (only somewhat former) industrial wasteland, a place described as “the most toxic place to live” (see http://gothamist.com/2007/04/11/toxic_williamsb.php). A place that, for example, boasts the city’s only chemical and nuclear storage facility (a block from you, btw) and which boasts the highest childhood asthma rates in the country. Great parenting!

Undoubtedly, this quality decision making results from your advanced degree and tastemaker status. You are a hip “young professional.” Too vain to admit to yourself that you are now a “family man,” that your undergrad keg-stand glory days are behind you, you sit home on Saturday night and sip craft beers with the wifey. Face it: you have become your parents.
